Who Told You That You Were Naked?

Have you ever opened your Bible, and it felt like God was speaking right to you? Like He was reaching into that quiet moment, uncovering something you didn’t even know you were searching for?

That’s what happened to me after a long week. I was tired and searching for something to lift me, something to remind me who I am and why I’m here. I opened to Genesis 3, a chapter I’ve read many times before, but this time, one verse stopped me.

“Who told you that you were naked?” (Genesis 3:11)

It’s one of the most powerful questions God has ever asked.

God wasn’t just talking about Adam’s body. He was talking about how Adam saw himself after sin entered the world. Before that, Adam and Eve were naked and unashamed. They walked in full freedom: fully known and fully loved by God. But the moment they listened to another voice, everything changed. Shame crept in. Fear took hold. Hiding became their instinct. Their identity shifted, not because God changed, but because they believed a lie.

The truth is, God never told Adam he was naked. Shame did. Fear did. Lies did. And those same lies still whisper to us today, trying to tell us who we are, and who we are not.

Now let me ask you: Who told you you weren’t enough? Who told you that you have no purpose? Who told you that you were too broken to be loved?  Who told you your past defines your future? Because God never said that about you.

When did you start feeling naked? Maybe you don’t call it “naked,” but you know the feeling: The fear that you’ll never measure up. The voice that says you’re behind everyone else. The guilt that whispers you’ve messed up too much to be used by God.

I’ve felt that too. There were seasons when I couldn’t look in the mirror without picking myself apart. I tried to cover it up with busyness, people-pleasing, and pretending everything was fine. But those are just modern fig leaves.

Like Adam and Eve, we sew coverings to hide what we’re ashamed of. We think we have to perform, people-please, or perfect our way into being loved and seen.

But here’s the beautiful part: God didn’t leave Adam and Eve covered in fig leaves. He made coverings for them Himself. He covered them through a sacrifice, pointing us to Jesus, who would one day cover us completely with His righteousness.

If you’re tired of living under lies that don’t belong to you, let’s break that agreement right now. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It just needs to be real.

Take a moment, breathe, and say this out loud:

God, I break agreement with every lie that says I’m not enough, not loved, or not worthy. I reject shame, fear, and comparison. I receive Your truth that I am loved, covered, and chosen. I am not naked; I am clothed in Christ. Help me to see myself the way You see me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

So today, and every day after, I charge you to keep walking toward God’s voice. You don’t have to have it all together to come to Him. God isn’t looking for your perfection; He’s looking for your heart.

If you’re still struggling, that’s okay. Healing is a journey, not a race. What matters is that you keep coming back to His voice: the voice that calls you “Beloved,” “Mine,” and “Chosen.” The voice that says: “Who told you that? Because I never said that about you.”

Take a moment today to pause and let God search your heart. Write down:

  • What lie have I believed about myself?
  • Who or what planted that lie?
  • What does God say about me instead?

Let the Holy Spirit meet you in that quiet place and replace every lie with truth.

Hear me clearly: You are not too far gone. You are not behind. You are not forgotten. You are not naked. You are covered, loved, and chosen. You are His.

Pray With Me:

Father God,
I come to You, ready to let go of the lies I’ve believed about myself. I lay down shame, fear, and every word spoken over me that doesn’t match what You say. I choose to receive Your truth that I am loved, chosen, and covered by Jesus. Break every stronghold in my mind that keeps me stuck, and replace it with Your freedom and peace. Teach me to see myself through Your eyes, and give me the courage to walk in the purpose You have for me. Thank You for Your love that never fails. I receive it now, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

If this spoke to you, share it with someone who needs to remember who they truly are in Christ.
