What Silence Reveals

Have you ever felt like if you didn’t talk, no one would notice? I used to live there… thinking that staying quiet meant I was invisible. That if I didn’t constantly announce what I was doing, people would just walk past my life like I wasn’t even there.

Turns out, that’s not how God works. Silence isn’t always hiding. Sometimes, it’s trust.

I remember a time I was writing for a Christian magazine… interviewing pastors, gospel artists, and leaders you’d recognize in a heartbeat. It was meaningful work, but I didn’t talk much about it. I just did the work. Then one day, I got an email inviting me to Dallas to be honored for my contributions.

And… I didn’t want to go.

I showed the email to my sister. She got excited and asked, “Are you going?” I said, “Nope. I’m good behind the scenes.” Standing on a stage, letting people clap for something God gave me? That didn’t feel necessary.

She looked at me and said something that has been with me to this day: “Sometimes, God brings you to the front so people can see His power through you.”

I wasn’t hiding. I just didn’t think being seen mattered. Eventually, she convinced me. She even bought my plane ticket (I see you, sis).

Standing on that stage, thanking God, I realized that silence doesn’t need applause. It rests in confidence.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” That stillness? It’s not boring. It’s powerful.

Fast forward a few years. I’m on a business trip in Chicago, long day of meetings, dragging my suitcase through the hotel lobby, when a coworker leans over and goes, “I heard you’re a published author.”

Wait, what? I hadn’t exactly been advertising it. Suddenly, questions started flying. What kind of books? How long have you been writing? Why didn’t we know?

I hadn’t been quiet on purpose. I just never felt the need to brag. Writing was something I did because God called me to it, not because I needed validation. Later that night, a colleague who is also good friend of mine pulled me aside: “We’re not keeping you a secret anymore. You’re a man of God. A leader. A father. It’s time to stop shrinking.”

And just like that, God blessed the work. I didn’t push or force doors to open. I stayed faithful, and quiet… and He made the noise on my behalf.

Proverbs 27:2 says, “Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth.” It’s not about false humility. It’s about trust. Trust that if God gave you a gift, He knows when, and how to reveal it.

Silence also exposes our motives. When we stop talking about ourselves, we start hearing ourselves. Are we chasing applause, or following God? I’ve found that truth sounds louder when everything else is quiet. Step away from comparisons, opinions, and pressure... and you will begin to hear God's voice clearly.

1 Kings 19:12 reminds us that God “was not in the wind, nor the earthquake, nor the fire, but in a gentle whisper.”

We often fear being overlooked because, let’s be honest, we want to be seen. But light doesn’t try to be noticed. It shines naturally. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, that they may glorify your Father in heaven.” The goal isn’t making a name for yourself. It’s God being glorified.

Again, silence isn’t hiding. It’s trusting. Believing that God sees, that He knows, and that He will reveal it at the right time. If your silence comes from fear, that’s hesitation. But if your silence comes from faith, from knowing God sees, that’s strength.

Ask yourself: Are you okay being unknown if God is known? Are you willing to let Him write your introduction?

This week, choose one area where you’ve been trying to prove yourself. Lay it down completely. Stop announcing it. Release it to God... and watch what rises in the silence.

Pray with me.

Father God,
Teach me the kind of silence that trusts You. Quiet the parts of me that want applause more than obedience. Help me rest in knowing You see me, called me, and You’ll open every door at the right time. If I step forward, let it be because You led me there. If I end up on a stage, let everyone know the spotlight is Yours. And Lord, if You could sprinkle in a little humor so I don’t trip over my own feet, I’d appreciate it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
