What if the loudest voice in your life isn’t even yours?
I was sitting in my living room planning out my week, thinking I had everything under control… but I didn’t. My mind was loud, not with my own thoughts, but with everything else. Expectations, opinions, and doubts… all competing for space.
And then I heard a voice say: If you listen to every voice long enough, one day you won’t recognize your own, because not every voice is meant to live inside you.
I had to stop and give that some thought, because those words didn’t just sound deep, they felt personal.
Everywhere we turn, something is trying to define us. Social media, TV, coworkers, friends, family… even people who say they “just want the best for you,” but somehow always leave you second-guessing yourself. It’s like being in a room where everyone is talking at once, and somehow you’re supposed to find the truth in it.
Looking back, I can see how easily that noise got in.
Growing up, I didn’t really have role models, and I wasn’t trying to be like anybody. I didn’t even know who I was yet, so I assumed I’d figure it out along the way. That was the plan… to just live and hope the truth showed up like an Amazon package.
But it didn’t come like that.
I remember walking away from certain situations thinking, “That’s not even me.” But instead of changing anything, I kept going back, because belonging felt more important than being true to myself. Somewhere in all of that, I slowly stopped listening to my own voice and started listening to everyone and everything else... even my own pain.
There’s a quote by Carl Jung that says, “The world will ask you who you are, and if you do not know, it will tell you.” And it does… quickly. It’ll give you a version of yourself that serves its purpose, not yours.
If you don’t let God define you, something else will.
And the danger isn’t just what we hear… it’s what we agree with. Because what you listen to long enough doesn’t feel strange anymore. It starts to feel normal. And what feels normal eventually starts to feel right… even when it's wrong.
That’s how people end up living divided lives… smiling on the outside but empty on the inside, doing what looks right while knowing deep down it isn’t.
At some point, you have to decide what gets access to your mind… because not every voice deserves a place there.
Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” His voice isn’t confusing or competing for attention. It’s clear, personal, and true.
But you have to learn it. It takes intention... choosing His voice over the noise again and again.
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” That kind of renewal doesn’t come from scrolling or taking advice from people who are just as lost. It comes when God begins to change how you think.
The wrong voices aren’t always obvious. Sometimes they sound confident and convincing… like you on a tired day. God’s voice doesn’t work like that. He doesn’t force His way in: He speaks and invites.
Isaiah 30:21 says, “This is the way; walk in it.” That is not confusion. It is direction.
Looking back, I can see how God was already redirecting me even when I didn’t recognize it. What I thought was me trying to figure life out was Him pulling me back to who I was created to be.
Psalm 139:14 says, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” That’s not just a verse to repeat, it’s identity spoken over you.
So why do we let voices that didn’t create us define us? You have to draw the line. Not every opinion deserves agreement, and not every voice deserves attention. You don’t become who you’re meant to be by listening to everything. You become it by learning to recognize the voice of God and following it.
So here’s the question: whose voice is leading your life?
Is it the noise of the world, the expectations of others, or the voice of God? Because only one of those will lead you to who you were created to be.
Take a moment and think about what you’ve been listening to lately. Which voices have been the loudest: and do they actually sound like Him?
If not, it might be time to let some things go.
Unfollow what’s causing confusion. Step back from conversations that drain you, and spend time in God’s Word… even if it’s just a few minutes a day. You don’t need a perfect routine, just a willing heart.
And life changes when God is the one leading it.
Pray with me
Father God,
Thank You for speaking, even when I’ve been listening to everything but You. Help me recognize Your voice above every other voice. Give me wisdom to know what belongs in my life and courage to let go of what doesn’t. Teach me who I am through Your truth, not the world’s opinions. And when I start drifting, gently bring me back. I choose You, Your voice, and Your way.
