The Cost of Choosing God

Writer: Ron HaleRon Hale
If you know anything about chess, you know it’s a game of strategy, patience, and sacrifice. Sometimes, you have to let go of certain pieces to protect what’s most important. One wrong move can cost you the game. But sometimes, the hardest sacrifices lead to the greatest victories.

The same is true when you choose to walk with God.

Some relationships will change. Some people will walk away. And at times, you’ll feel like you’re standing alone. But you’re not. God is with you, guiding you through every move.

Think about a chessboard. It represents life, with each square symbolizing different situations and choices. Every piece moves differently, just like the people and things in your life. Some are meant to stay—like the king, which represents your faith, the core of who you are. Others? They’re only with you for a season. And just like in chess, sometimes, you have to let go of certain pieces to win the game.

When you decide to truly follow God, your values start to change. The conversations you used to enjoy don’t feel the same. The places you used to go don’t bring the same excitement. You start craving something deeper, something real. And as you grow, some people won’t understand. Some will distance themselves. Others will make you feel like you’re "too much" or "too different."

It’s not because you think you’re better than them—it’s because you’re moving in a different direction. This is the cost of choosing God.

I remember when I got serious about my faith. I let go of certain habits, and before I knew it, the people closest to me started drifting away. My circle got so small that I started questioning myself.

“Am I doing something wrong?”
“Should I just go back to how things were?”
“Is it really worth it?”

For a moment, I thought about compromising—about dimming my light just to fit in. But then God reminded me: I wasn’t walking the wrong path—I was just walking a different one.

But here’s the truth: whatever you lose in the process was never meant to stay.

The Bible says in Luke 9:23, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Sometimes, separation is necessary for elevation.

Maybe for you, it’s not just relationships. Maybe it’s a habit, a mindset, a job, or a comfort zone that you know isn’t leading you closer to God. And letting go of it? That’s not easy.

But choosing God means choosing obedience, even when it’s uncomfortable. It means trusting that whatever you release, He will replace with something greater.

Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

It’s not rejection—it’s redirection.

If you’re in a season where it feels like you’re losing more than you’re gaining, hold on to this: God is never subtracting—He’s making room for more.

You may have lost some things, but you’ve gained something far greater—His presence, His guidance, and His purpose for your life. And that’s worth more than anything you had to leave behind.

Pray with Me:

"Lord, I know that following You comes with sacrifice. Help me trust You when I have to let go. Give me the strength to walk away from anything that pulls me from You, even when it’s hard. Fill my heart with peace, knowing that Your plan is greater than my own. Align me with people who will help me grow in You, and remove anything that stands in the way of my purpose. I choose You above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
