Every Second Counts

I was having a conversation with my daughter the other day, and I asked her, “What are you passionate about?” She looked at me, smiled, and said, “Dad, let’s just go get lunch.” I smiled back, knowing she wasn’t ready for one of my deep questions: lunch was all she had in mind. I get it. But I didn’t let it go. I gave it a few more minutes, then had to jump into a meeting and promised myself I’d revisit the question later.

By the time the meeting ended, I started thinking about dinner plans, what I had to do after work, and so many other things. Before I knew it, the day was almost gone. I asked myself, “Where did the time go?”

That’s when it hit me.

God gives us 24 hours every day. That’s 1,440 minutes, or 86,400 seconds. Each one is precious, and once it’s gone, we can’t get it back. We often say every penny counts, but every second counts even more, because every second comes from the Creator of everything.

Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” God wants us to use our time wisely and not waste a single moment.

We might think there’s plenty of time, but the truth is, we don’t have time to stay stuck or wait until we “feel ready.” That’s not how God’s purpose moves in our lives.

When God calls you to something, He’s not waiting for the perfect time. He’s asking you to use the moment you have right now (Ecclesiastes 11:4). Sometimes it feels like we have forever to figure it out, but waiting for the “right moment” can keep us frozen in place.

His Word is alive, and so is the gift He placed inside you. Heaven is waiting on your yes. You don’t need all the answers: just the faith to take the step He’s calling you to take.

Think about someone with a voice that could heal hearts or a gift that could bring hope. But fear keeps them silent, hiding what God placed inside them. That silence doesn’t just hold them back; it holds back the light God meant to break through darkness. When we bury what God has given us, we’re not just delaying our purpose, we’re delaying someone else’s breakthrough.

Jesus shared a story about three servants given talents. Two used what they were given, and their gifts grew. But one, afraid to fail, buried his talent, and there were consequences. Are you letting fear or busyness bury what God gave you? You’ve prayed for wisdom and breakthrough, which is good, but James 2:17 tells us, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

Sometimes we say we’re waiting on God, but the truth is, God is often waiting on us to take the next step. Waiting without moving can become disobedience dressed up as caution. Don’t let fear, perfectionism, or busyness keep you from stepping into what God has already equipped you to do.

Remember Moses? God called him to lead His people, but Moses doubted he was enough. He made excuses and delayed obeying because he didn’t fully trust God’s plan for him. Yet, when Moses finally stepped out in faith, God showed up in mighty ways. Your story can be like Moses’s too, once you trust and obey, God will do the rest.

You might feel too busy or think you don’t have enough time but you do. It’s not about more hours; it’s about how you use the ones you have. When something truly matters, you make time for it. Maybe you’re not too busy, you’re just missing the right priorities: your growth, your purpose, your rest, and your connection with God.

I’ve been there. I work, give to others, write, and follow God’s call even when I’m tired or feel unqualified, because obedience is far more powerful than perfection.

If you’re stuck, look in the mirror. The answer isn’t your job, your schedule, or your past. It’s you. And that’s good news because with God’s help, you can change.

So, what now? Will you keep saying, “I’ll start tomorrow,” and bury what God placed in you? Or will you stop, pray, surrender, and take a step, even a small one? Ask God to reveal your gift, teach you to use it, and breathe new life into it. He will, but He won’t force you. The choice is yours. Don’t wait. Every moment counts.

Let’s pray:

Father, thank You for every breath and every second You’ve given me. Forgive me for the times I’ve wasted time, hidden my gifts, and believed lies about who I am. Show me what You’ve placed inside me and teach me how to use it. Help me to move past fear, give me strength to start again, and courage to keep going. I want to walk fully in what You’ve called me to do, not tomorrow, but today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
