Everything isn’t always as it appears. Sometimes, we need to look beyond the surface and trust in what’s unseen.
In 2017, I was outside raking leaves from my yard, which honestly looked more like a weed pit than anything else. Just as I was making some progress, my neighbor walked over. I’d recently moved in, so I assumed he was coming to introduce himself. After a brief hello, he looked around, chuckled, and said, “The neighbors call this yard a weed pit. It’s going to take a miracle to fix it up.”
I turned to him and smiled. “I believe in miracles,” I replied.
In that moment, I had two choices: I could believe him, or I could believe in something bigger.
I chose faith.
Soon after, a friend came over with his machinery and helped dig up all the weeds in both the front and back yards. We spread grass seed and covered it with hay. But it wasn’t easy going—birds kept landing in the yard and feasting on the seeds. Every day, I’d chase them off, laughing at myself as I imagined my neighbors watching, probably recording me for social media. It was a sight, I’m sure.
Around that time, I also had an irrigation system installed, hoping it would speed up the process. But after a few months, there was still no sign of green grass. From time to time, my neighbor would swing by, probably to see if his prediction had come true. Still, I kept believing, even though the results weren’t immediate.
Nine months passed, and the yard still looked pretty bare. But I kept working, kept watering, kept shooing away those birds. I even wore a shirt that read, “Jesus is enough.” Every time I looked down at it, it was like a reminder to keep going.
Finally, in the summer of 2018, I saw the first, delicate blades of grass starting to peek through the soil. It wasn’t until the following spring that my yard flourished. By then, I had the greenest grass in the entire neighborhood.
One day, that same neighbor stopped by. This time, he looked around in awe and said, “Wow, your yard looks amazing.”
I just smiled and replied, “I told you—I believe in miracles.”
Sometimes, life can look just like my yard did: barren, unpromising, maybe even a bit hopeless. But when you trust in God and believe that He is at work, nothing and no one can hold you back. Matthew 19:26 says, “With man, this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.”
Whatever you’re facing—a dream you’ve had for years, a new job, your health, or a closer walk with God—remember the story of the weed pit, the doubting voices, the obstacles. They’re temporary. Faith without action is empty, but when faith is paired with effort, that’s when growth happens. If I had simply believed but hadn’t put in the work, my yard would still be a weed pit.
Think about your own “yard.” What is it that you want to grow? What would it look like if you pushed through the doubts, kept believing, and did the work? You’re called to do great things. Believe, put in the work, and watch your life grow.
Faith doesn’t always yield immediate results, but strong faith endures testing. So, what is your faith telling you today? Believe boldly, act with purpose, and watch as faith turns obstacles into miracles.
