Who Are You Living For?

Writer: Ron HaleRon Hale
Have you ever stopped to think about how much of your identity has been shaped by others? From the moment we’re born, we absorb the thoughts, beliefs, and expectations of those around us. But too often, these voices don’t reflect who we truly are. Instead, they lead us to doubt ourselves and search for approval from others, causing us to lose touch with the person God created us to be.

Does that sound familiar? It does to me.

For years, I lived behind a mask. I’m not afraid to admit it. After hearing countless times that I wasn’t good enough, I hid. I was too afraid to let people see the real me. I worried they wouldn’t accept me, so I tried to become what I thought they wanted. But deep down, I felt lost. My thoughts, decisions, and dreams weren’t my own—they were shaped by others.

In my book Secrets End, the main character faces a similar struggle. He seems to have it all—success, wealth, and admiration. But inside, he’s empty because he’s living a life built on other people’s expectations. His breakthrough comes when he’s faced with a life-changing decision. He chooses to take off the mask, defy the world’s opinions, and live a life true to himself.

That story mirrors a choice we all face: Will we keep living for others, or will we live for God?

The battle for our identity begins in our minds. Romans 12:2 reminds us: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

When we let the world—or even well-meaning people—control our thoughts, we lose touch with who God created us to be. It’s like handing someone else the pen and letting them write your story.

But here’s the good news: God wants to help you take back your thoughts. He wants you to see yourself as He does—worthy, loved, and full of potential.

Living authentically takes courage. It’s about standing firm in who you are, even when others don’t understand or try to move you in a different direction. Too often, we hide our true selves, either to fit in or because we’re afraid of judgment. We search for validation, measuring our worth by the opinions of others, yet deep down, we know we’re meant for more.

The world is filled with imitation. People try to be someone they’re not, and the pressure to conform—whether from social media, family, or friends—can be overwhelming. But here’s the truth: God made you one of a kind. There’s no one else on this earth like you. When He made you, He tied destiny to your life.

You can admire the courage of David as he faced Goliath or the patience of Noah as he built the ark, but God didn’t create you to copy their journeys. Psalm 139:14 reminds us: "I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." You were made with purpose, and you are already enough. Trusting in this truth allows you to let go of the need for others' approval, empowering you to live boldly and authentically.

Many of us spend our lives waiting—waiting for approval, success, or relationships to complete us. Yet, the blessings we seek are already within reach. They begin with seeking God. When you seek Him, you’ll discover your true self. He leads you to a life filled with peace, purpose, and joy—a life that’s uniquely yours.

John 10:10 assures us: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." True fulfillment resides in living as the person God created you to be.

Here’s a prayer to help you take that first step:

Heavenly Father,
I come to You with an open heart. For too long, I’ve allowed the world to shape my thoughts and identity. I’ve worn masks and lived for others’ approval instead of seeking Yours. Forgive me, Lord, and help me to see myself through Your eyes. Teach me to trust in Your plan for my life and to walk in the purpose You’ve created for me. Thank You for loving me unconditionally and for guiding me toward the person You designed me to be.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Living authentically begins with God. Stop waiting for the perfect moment to take off the mask. The perfect moment is now. Seek Him, trust Him, and let Him guide you into a life of freedom, purpose, and joy.

Remember this: there is no one and nothing on earth greater than God. His love for you is unmatched, His plans for you are perfect, and His power to transform your life is limitless.

Your story isn’t over. With God, it’s just beginning.
