The Force Behind the Stone

Some battles may feel bigger than anything you can handle. But God is bigger. This blog is a reminder that He is the strength behind every stone you carry.

One morning, I walked into my office and saw an envelope sitting on my desk. Nothing fancy, just a plain interoffice envelope with my name on it. It was from a former manager.

Inside, a small stone rolled out. The kind you’d walk past a hundred times and never notice. Along with it was a note. She had been on a mission trip in the Valley of Elah, the very place where David defeated Goliath, and picked up that stone while she was there. She said she wanted me to have it as a reminder: "You’ll face battles that come without warning and wars that test everything you believe. But let this stone remind you that no weapon formed against you will ever win. It was never the stone that brought Goliath down, it was the hand of God behind it."

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you shall condemn.” (Isaiah 54:17) … This verse reminds us that God is the real power behind every victory, not our plans, not our strength, but His Spirit moving in ways we can't always see.

I held that stone for a while. It wasn’t much to look at, but in my hands, it became a reminder that God is bigger than any battle I’ll ever face. Bigger than fear. Bigger than the things I can’t control.

As the Psalm says: “The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 118:6) … It’s a promise that gives courage when fear tries to speak louder than God’s presence.

That was ten years ago, and to this day, I still carry that stone with me. Through the good days and the hard ones, it’s been a quiet reminder that God is with me, just like He was with David.

What I’ve learned is that Goliath isn’t the whole story. He’s just the test that tries to make you forget Who stands with you.

David walked onto that field with no armor, no army, just a sling, five smooth stones, and a faith that God would fight for him. He didn’t win because of his strength, skill, or plan. He won because God was with him. One stone in his hand, guided by God, was all it took. God gave the victory.

That’s how God works in our lives too. He prepares us in ways we don’t see, builds faith we don’t notice, and equips us for battles that feel impossible. The shepherd boy didn’t fight lions and bears to prove himself. He did it because God was shaping him for what only God could do.

Remember what God says: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) … Even when we don’t see it, He is guiding, protecting, and preparing us for what’s ahead.

Maybe that’s you right now. Maybe you’re in a place where no one sees the fight you’re in. Maybe you’re wondering if any of it matters.

God sees. He knows the work He’s doing in you, even when it doesn’t show. You’re not behind, you’re being built, shaped, and strengthened in ways that aren’t visible yet.

Sometimes what feels like loss is actually God protecting you. What looked like a closed door was really God protecting you. What felt like a no was actually His yes coming in a different way.

That’s what the stone reminds me of: not just victory, but God’s mercy. Sometimes victory isn’t about what falls at your feet. It’s about what God keeps from falling on you.

If your faith feels tired right now, hear this: you will not lose this battle. You don’t have to have it all together. You just have to keep trusting the One who never fails.

Take a deep breath. Pick up your stone… whatever that looks like for you. Face what’s in front of you. Say it if you need to: “The battle isn’t mine. It belongs to the Lord.”

And then stand. Victory begins the moment faith rises inside you, not when the giant falls.

Before this week ends, find something that reminds you of God’s strength. A stone, a Bible verse, an encouraging word… whatever speaks to you. Keep it with you. Let it remind you that God is in control when fear shows up.

When something feels too big, say these words: “God, You are the force behind my stone.”

Faith begins to rise the moment you remember who’s fighting for you.

Pray with me

God,
Thank You for holding me when I can’t stand. Thank You for the quiet times when You get me ready before the battle. When fear comes, remind me who You are. When doubt comes, keep me in Your peace. You give me courage and strength for everything I face. Use my life to show how faithful You are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
