Have you ever looked around and thought, “God must have favorites”? Like maybe He only uses people with big names, big voices, or big platforms? Yeah, I use to think that way too..
I'd watch others doing what I believed I was called to do, and I’d assume they had something I didn’t… more courage, more opportunities, maybe life just worked out easier for them.
But here's the truth that changed everything for me: God uses the least expected to do His greatest work. It’s written all throughout Scripture.
Take David, for example. He wasn’t a warrior. He was a teenage shepherd boy. But God used him to take down a giant when everyone else was too afraid to try.
1 Samuel 16:7 shows us. “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Then there was Moses. He had a speech problem and didn’t even want the assignment God gave him. But God used him to part the Red Sea and lead an entire nation to freedom.
And let’s not forget Rahab. She was a prostitute, but God used her to protect the Israelite spies and help His people win a major victory. They weren’t the ones anyone expected, and maybe that’s exactly why God chose them. Because when He moves through the unexpected, no one else can take the credit. All the glory goes back to Him.
“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards... But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.” (1 Corinthians 1:26-27)
God had to remind me that He doesn’t call the ready, He calls the willing. I wasn’t overlooked; I was being developed. And when I finally stopped chasing what I thought I lacked, I started to see the beauty in what He had already given me.
But then, one day, God used me. Me, the quiet one. The unsure one. The one who didn’t think they’d ever be used by God. And it reminded me that God doesn’t need a crowd’s approval to call someone.
Acts 4:13 says, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.”
Peter was a fisherman. Not a scholar. Not a preacher. But God used him to preach one of the greatest sermons ever recorded in Scripture, and thousands were saved in one day.
If God can use David, Moses, Rahab, Peter, and yes, even me… then He can absolutely use you.
You don’t have to sing like Whitney Houston or speak like a TED Talk pro. You just have to be willing. Because the gifts God has given you are unique, intentional, and powerful. No one else can use them the way you can. They’re reserved just for you.
The other day I came across a video of a little boy encouraging his mom. He said. “You can get a better job. You can make more money. You can even be rich. You could live in the White House some day. You can do whatever you want to do. Its not up to other people. It’s up to you.”
I smiled because that little boy believed in her without even knowing the limits adults put on themselves. And it reminded me… that’s how God sees us. He sees beyond what we think is possible and uses us in ways we never imagined.
“Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example... in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”(1 Timothy 4:12)
Stop comparing. Stop doubting. Stop holding back just because others can’t see the greatness God placed inside you.
When God sets you in motion, nothing can hold you down. You’ll rise higher than you ever thought possible, because His lift never fails.
Today, I challenge you to say “yes” to God, no matter how unqualified you feel. Use what He’s given you, right where you are. Stop comparing yourself to others, because what God has for you to do, no one else can do. You just have to trust that He does.
Pray with me
Father God,
Thank You for using the unexpected, the overlooked, and the ordinary. Thank You for seeing something in me even when I can’t see it myself. Help me to stop comparing and start believing that You can work through me. Give me the courage to say yes, even when I feel small. Remind me that You don’t call the qualified, You qualify the called. I trust You. Use me for something great. In Jesus’ name, amen.
