A few days ago, I came across a video that stopped me in my tracks. A kid was opening a box of sneakers he had clearly wanted, but what stood out wasn’t just his excitement. It was the reaction of the friend or younger brother beside him. The moment he saw what was inside, his whole face lit up. He gave him a high-five and started celebrating like he had just received the shoes himself.
That moment was about more than sneakers. It was a pure, unfiltered display of joy for someone else’s blessing. No jealousy. No “I wish it were me.” Just genuine happiness for someone else’s win.
And it made me ask: Are you a Destiny Helper or a Destiny Thief?
A Destiny Helper is someone who encourages, supports, and uplifts others. They push you closer to your purpose, helping you grow into the person you were meant to be. These are the people who celebrate your victories and stand by you through challenges. They cheer you on, even when they’re still waiting for their own breakthrough.
A Destiny Thief, on the other hand, does the opposite. Some do it intentionally—spreading negativity, discouraging your dreams, or secretly hoping you fail. Others don’t even realize they’re doing it, but they drain your energy, plant seeds of doubt, or lead you away from your purpose. They make you question your own abilities, distract you with unnecessary drama, or compete with you when they should be supporting you.
One of the earliest examples of a Destiny Thief is found in the story of Cain and Abel. Both brothers made offerings to God, but Abel’s was accepted while Cain’s was not. Instead of learning from it, improving, or celebrating his brother’s favor, Cain allowed jealousy to consume him. He let bitterness take root, and it led him to do the unthinkable—take his own brother’s life.
God had warned him, saying, “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." (Genesis 4:7)
Cain didn’t listen. He let his emotions turn him into a Destiny Thief, robbing his brother of his future and himself of God’s blessing.
Now, ask yourself: Are you your brother’s keeper, or does someone else’s success make you feel like you’re falling behind? Do you celebrate others, or does their progress make you uncomfortable?
Even Jesus wasn’t exempt from Destiny Thieves. He had one walking beside Him—Judas. This was a man who had seen Jesus perform miracles, walked with Him, eaten with Him, and yet, for thirty pieces of silver,he betrayed the One who came to save him.
Judas wasn’t just a Destiny Thief to Jesus—he was one to himself. Instead of repenting, he let his guilt consume him. And that’s the thing about being a Destiny Thief—it doesn’t just hurt the other person. It hurts you too.
But Jesus? He was the ultimate Destiny Helper. He lifted people up, healing the sick, encouraging the brokenhearted, and restoring the outcasts. He sacrificed for others, laying down His life so we could live in freedom. He believed in people—even the ones the world had given up on. Jesus didn’t compete—He completed.
So ask yourself honestly: Are you helping or hurting?
When your friend gets a promotion, do you celebrate or secretly feel like it should have been you? When someone shares their dream with you, do you encourage them or plant doubt? When people around you win, do you clap for them or compare?
God has a plan for everyone. There’s room for all of us at the table. You don’t need to take from someone else to receive what God has for you.
The Bible reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)
God didn’t make a mistake when He created you. You are uniquely designed for a purpose. Instead of envying someone else’s path, focus on walking your own.
Will you be a Destiny Helper, encouraging and uplifting others? Or a Destiny Thief, allowing jealousy and negativity to rob both you and others of God’s plan? Choose wisely.
Pray With Me
Heavenly Father, thank You for the life and purpose You have given me. Forgive me for any jealousy, comparison, or negativity I’ve allowed into my heart. Help me to be a Destiny Helper—someone who lifts others up, spreads love, and brings glory to You. Keep me from being a Destiny Thief, and remind me that my journey is mine alone. Let me walk in purpose, with confidence, knowing that what You have for me is for me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
